Debian 5.0 “Lenny” it will include proprietary firmware

from VivaLinux:

Finally Debian project developers decided not to further postpone the release of version 5.0 "Lenny" distribution of GNU / Linux and allow them to include this proprietary firmware files without source code (known as "blobs"). This decision corresponds to the No. 5 "Assuming that blobs comply with the GPL unless proved otherwise" of the recent vote conducted to determine that issue.

Debian principles that continue to firmware as "not desirable", but allow their incorporation into "Lenny" will not take priority over its release.

If the firmware files were removed from distribution, as the guidelines require the free software project would require changes included in the Kernel and reduce the number of supported hardware.
